One Word At A Time

In honor of National Stroke Awareness Month, Austin Speech Labs holds its annual One Word At A Time fundraiser each May.

One Word At A Time 2017

Austin Speech Labs hosted its eighth annual One Word At A Time event on May 3rd, 2017. Over 400 guests attended the event in honor of Stroke Awareness Month. Dr. David Paydarfar, Chair of Neurology at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin, was the keynote speaker. Dr. Paydarfar spoke about how The University of Texas Medical Center is going to revolutionize healthcare by rethinking how hospitals and medical schools approach patient care. He hopes to create partnerships with medical, rehabilitation, and outpatient care facilities like Austin Speech Labs allowing patients to get the care they need closer to home. Dr. Paydarfar identified the areas of concerns with health care and truly hopes to make a difference in providing better and more efficient care.

We were delighted to have Sarah Henry and Lillianne Goedders, current clients of Austin Speech Labs, share their amazing stories and triumphs. Sarah suffered a stroke at the age of 35. She has three small children and is working relentlessly to improve her ability to read, write and speak. Lillianne, a public speaker before her stroke, highlighted the fact that stroke can affect anyone at any age. She was living a healthy, vibrant life with no known risk factors of stroke. She did have a few warning signs but no one was able to link them to stroke. She reinforced that early care is vital in stroke recovery and knowing the signs and symptoms of strokes can save lives.

A special thanks to Laura York for chairing the event, and to all of our donors and sponsors. Thanks to you all we were able to raise over $250,000. We are so grateful for your continued support and dedication to helping stroke survivors One Word At A Time.

One Word At A Time 2016

Austin Speech Labs hosted its seventh annual One Word At A Time event on May 3rd, 2016. Over 450 guests attended the event honoring Dr. Everett Heinze and Dr. Tom Hill. The Neurologist have served on the advisory board of the organization from its inception, and have been an integral part of the growth and development of Austin Speech Labs.

Sherrie Frachtman returned to chair the event for the second year in a row. Her leadership and dedication helped us raise over $250,000 for stroke survivors. Julie Stansberry, a volunteer from 2015’s event, co-chaired 2016 and returned to the committee for 2017.

Lindy Jansky and Bill Hrncir, stroke survivors and former clients of Austin Speech Labs, shared their amazing stories as well. Both live outside of Austin and traveled back and forth in order to participate in multiple boot camp sessions after their strokes. They each have graduated from the program and are leading happy, fulfilled lives. Lindy is a communication partner for the organization and connects to clients in the office from her home in Corpus Christi using Skype. Bill, along with his wife Deedee, has started the Laredo stroke group. Bill also manages a company and is writing a book as he continues to spread awareness across Texas through his many public speaking events. Lindy and Bill have both fought their battles with amazing courage and dignity. We can’t thank them enough for taking the stage and bravely sharing their stories.

A special thanks to all of our donors and sponsors we are so grateful for your continued support and dedication to helping stroke survivors get their words back, One Word At A Time.
