Finding Strength Together: The Story of Our Stroke Support Group
Every Monday from 12 to 1 PM, something extraordinary happens at Austin Speech Labs. Stroke survivors from all over the world come together, either in person or on Zoom, to connect, share, and support one another. This isn’t just a group—it’s a community built on understanding, resilience, and hope.
What makes this support group so special? It’s led by four incredible stroke survivors: Louise Michaud, Jerry Haggins, Beth Condon, and Todd Ballengee. They bring something no therapist or staff member ever could—the perspective of someone who has lived through a stroke. Their personal experiences allow them to connect with clients on a level that’s both deeply personal and profoundly inspiring.
Louise, Jerry, Beth, and Todd know what it’s like to face the uncertainty, frustration, and emotional weight of recovery. While they might not be where they imagined they’d be before their strokes, they’ve built full, meaningful lives. Each week, they share that strength with others, helping them find their own paths forward. They offer advice, listen without judgment, and celebrate every win, no matter how small.
The group has even gone beyond conversations to bring in free monthly yoga sessions, promoting holistic healing. It’s a reflection of their commitment to creating a space that nurtures both body and mind.
This support group isn’t just a lifeline for clients; it’s a reminder of what’s possible after a stroke. From Belgium to Austin, its reach is global, and its impact is immeasurable.
If you’ve ever wondered what community looks like in action, this group is the perfect example. We’re so proud of what they’ve built and grateful for the hope they bring to stroke survivors everywhere.
